  Tijdens het 18de Congres van de European Sleep Research Society in Innsbruck, Oostenrijk (12-16 sept. 2006), hebben onderzoekers van de Universiteit van Uppsala de resultaten van hun onderzoek over slaap in Zweden toegelicht.
  
  In 1981 en 2003 beantwoordde een representatief aantal mensen de volgende vraag: 'Had u slaapproblemen tijdens de laatste twee weken?'
  
  In 1981 antwoordden 9% van de respondenten 'ja', terwijl in 2003 43% van de respondenten 'ja' antwoordden.
  
  Dit is een vijfvoudige verhoging van slaapproblemen tijdens de afgelopen 20 jaar, een onrustwekkend cijfer.

Publication bias is a well-known problem —it's defined in a recent, widely read New Yorker article as "the tendency of scientists and scientific journals to prefer positive data over null results, which is what happens when no effect is found." This may be generally true, but once again, the usual rules don't apply to EMFs. Here researchers (and editors) are all too often more interested in publishing failures than successes. Actually, for EMFs, failure is success, promising financial rewards of one kind or another. This is an old story, but now Niels Kuster says enough is enough. In a broadside against the Bioelectromagnetics Society (BEMS), Kuster warns that the society is "threatened" by its "biased scientific culture."

Top researchers advise precaution on mobile phone use

In a dramatic message in the Journal Occupational and Environmental Medicine, two leading Interphone researchers now advise the following: Simple and low-cost measures, such as the use of text messages, hands-free kits and/or the loudspeaker mode of the phone could substantially reduce exposure to the brain from mobile phones. Therefore, until definitive scientific answers are available, the adoption of such precautions, particularly among young people, is advisable.

"This partial list shows recent studies (mostly since 2000) that found an effect from radio frequency electro-magnetic fields at or below the power levels of mobile phones (i.e. equivalent to SAR 2 W/kg - many exposures are much lower than this). If all positive studies were included there would be more than 500."

Stopumts.nl - In een brief aan het tijdschrift Epidemiology schrijven de onderzoekers Czerninski en Zini over de verontrustende stijging, vooral na 2001, van speekselklierkanker onder de bevolking van Israël. De onderzoekers stellen dat dit mogelijk te wijten is aan de enorme toename in gsm-gebruik.

Een nieuwe studie bij uitgevoerd bij 100.000 vrouwen bevestigt dat moeders die een gsm gebruiken tijdens de zwangerschap, een grotere kans hebben dat hun kinderen later gedragsproblemen zullen vertonen.

"Pregnant mums who regularly use mobile phones may be more likely to have kids with behavioural problems, particularly if those children start using mobile phones early themselves, suggests research published online in the Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health."

De straling van zendinstallaties voor mobiele telefonie en draadloos internet is schadelijk voor bomen, stelt een recent Nederlands onderzoek van de Wageningen Universiteit, TNO en de gemeente Alphen aan den Rijn.

Het onderzoek startte nadat ambtenaren van Alphen aan den Rijn vijf jaar geleden vreemde zaken ontdekten bij bomen. Ze krijgen opmerkelijke afwijkingen in groei, en bloedingen en scheuren in de bast. De ziekteverschijnselen blijken zich echter niet te beperken tot de Nederlandse gemeente, maar komen voor in de hele westerse wereld, meldt Webwereld.

Straling kan allergische reacties versterken

Cellular phone use for one continuous hour exacerbates allergic responses to dust and pollen in adults with eczema, according to a new study in International Archives of Allergy and Immunology (2002;129:348–50). The findings of the study, while only preliminary, suggest that the microwave radiation emitted from cell phones may increase sensitivity to specific allergens, potentially making allergy symptoms worse.
