stopumts.nl / nu.nl - De straling van een mobiele telefoon beïnvloedt de hersenontwikkeling van muizen al in de baarmoeder. Dit leidt mogelijk tot hyperactiviteit, schrijven onderzoekers van de Yale School of Medicine donderdag in Scientific Report, een publicatie van Nature.

Ze vergeleken twee groepen zwangere muizen. De ene groep zat in een kooi waar een mobiele telefoon hing die af en toe rinkelde. Bij de andere groep was ook een mobieltje bovenin de kooi geplaatst, maar deze stond uit. Nadat beide groepen muizen hun kroost hadden gebaard en deze volwassen waren geworden, meetten ze de hersenactiviteit van het nageslacht.

De onderzoekers constateerden dat de muizen uit de kooi met het actieve mobieltje hyperactiever en angstiger waren en dat bovendien hun geheugencapaciteit afgenomen was. Het hersengebied dat bij deze muizen werd beïnvloed is hetzelfde als bij ADHD.

"We hebben laten zien dat gedragsproblemen in muizen lijken op ADHD en worden veroorzaakt door blootstelling aan mobiele telefoons in de baarmoeder", zegt hoogleraar Taylor. "De toename aan gedragsproblemen bij mensen zou deels kunnen komen door dezelfde straling".

Nature - Neurobehavioral disorders are increasingly prevalent in children, however their etiology is not well understood. An association between prenatal cellular telephone use and hyperactivity in children has been postulated, yet the direct effects of radiofrequency radiation exposure on neurodevelopment remain unknown.

Here we used a mouse model to demonstrate that in-utero radiofrequency exposure from cellular telephones does affect adult behavior. Mice exposed in-utero were hyperactive and had impaired memory as determined using the object recognition, light/dark box and step-down assays. Whole cell patch clamp recordings of miniature excitatory postsynaptic currents (mEPSCs) revealed that these behavioral changes were due to altered neuronal developmental programming. 

We present the first experimental evidence of neuropathology due to in-utero cellular telephone radiation.

"In conclusion, the main findings in the thesis suggest that intensive ICT use can have an impact on mental health in young adults. Frequent mobile phone use was a prospective risk factor for reporting sleep disturbances in the men and symptoms of depression in both sexes. Intensive computer use ("intensive" in terms of duration of use or continuous use without breaks) was a prospective risk factor for reporting sleep disturbances in the men and stress, sleep disturbances, and symptoms of depression in the women. Combined intensive computer and mobile phone use enhanced associations with mental health symptoms."
